3″ x 3″ – POST #2

It’s weird what you end up painting when  you don’t really have direction. Your mind just jumps around between things you know, techniques you are familiar with, imagery that surrounds you and on occasion that brilliant moment of true creativity. The images below are examples of one or more of those ideas listed above. Fury critters wrapped in bold statements and color washes defined by a few hard lines.

The Orb – color washes pushed this image into a more defined image. Still abstract and loose the solidity of the orb brings a really nice contract to the background

Oh Look it’s a Squirrel – No one should ever be surprised when a fury critter makes it into my imagery. I wont lie that hook arm makes me mental but these are just small paintings that are meant for me and who ever stumbles upon them. So in that light I will embrace the hook arm and move on.

Enjoy and see you next time!

Two Hundred Seventy-Five!

I’ve been playing with tracing shadows and in this case the shadow of my hand. It’s interesting because a shadow has no detail and in many cases can get distorted. Most of the hands in this image still easily translate but there is one which is a bit unusual. Hands are a funny topic for me. As an artist they are so important but I have always been very judgmental of peoples hands. Are their fingers to short, to long, pointy or fat? Are they old and wrinkly or still smooth and youthful? Are they hard working, do they tell a story or have they never really been worked? The reality is I love hands but this piece initially had little to do with the topic of hands. I cannot say exactly what it’s about but it is a reaction to too many stress factors. As a little insight, my husband and I are in the middle of one of those grown up moments, trying to purchase a home, and I guess I never realized the stress involved in the process. It seems funny to me that you have all these people involved to help and yet you feel completely lost along a lot of the journey. The one thing I can say is that I am learning. Enjoy and see you next time!

Two Hundred Seventy Four!

Tonight’s image started as something entirely different about a month ago and I used that under-painting to help develop the final image. I suppose its really just a study of shape and color. I do enjoy the piece but it feels like a piece of a complete image maybe due to its size or elongated shape. Either way Enjoy and See you next time.

Two Hundred Seventy Three

Series 365 - 173

Day 1 created on September 8th

This image may not be complete but I wanted to share it now. I really enjoy sections but the upper left corner and the right semi circle section feel incomplete. Lets see what tonight brings I haven’t decided which piece I want to work on. Enjoy and see you next time!

Day 2 – revisited on September 9th

The left portion of the painting was really bothering me hence the addition of a new layer. I love the effect it has on the area but I wish I had gone darker. I feel that this idea could work really well with the trickling in of light. There is always a next time! Enjoy

Two Hundred Seventy-Two!

This was an image I finished last night. My heads been crazy recently so I decided to dive into a piece and not stop until I felt it was done. I started Friday night with a basic wash on the paper. I had been cleaning my cubicle at work and saw my notes page and thought it was actually very inspiring. It was lists and doodles which I then worked over with white out and highlighted or scratched out the remaining items on the page. I know it was never meant to be anything but it really flipped a switch in my head. It was like documentation but then the need to hide the information. On Friday night I worked on this image for ages just working off the last line I laid down. In the morning I continued going back in with Gesso to hide some items I felt did not work. By Sunday night I was done. I couldn’t see anywhere I needed to work on. I’ve already moved onto the second piece….. Enjoy and see you next time.

Two Hundred Sixty-Eight!

Last night I started painting for the fun of it and because the weather seemed perfect and I had a clear head and nothing to distract me. I love nights like that. Anyway I really had nothing in mind so I started to “doodle” and this is where we ended up. I’m not surprised to see that I ended up with clusters and webs, I mean lets be honest that is my favorite thing to draw, paint, make….

Enjoy and see you next time.

Two Hundred Sixty-Three!

Its Bambi! not really, but I must say this little deer came out rather to my liking. I am amazed at how painterly it looks considering I have a strong drawing background. I’ve always been told I draw with a paintbrush but I would say this looks painted not drawn! The one area that bothers me is that the face looks soooooo structured or skeletal, that has to do with the sketch I did prior to the painting as my reference though. Next time I’m drawing less underneath to prevent this outcome.

Two Hundred Fifty-Seven!

image

Abstract color wash exercise. I needed to clear my head and start mass producing. Do not be surprised if you suddenly see an increase in images being posted. I am on a mission to finish this challenge by the two-year mark! What I find most entertaining about this type of image making is that it always starts completely unorganized and as it develops I try to pull the image from what I’ve already laid down. It is such a different type of working method from all of the recent animal images which have to be planned even prior to laying the first mark on the paper. Enjoy.

Two Hundred Fifty-Five!

Meet Buddy, the most perfect Chocolate lab in the whole wide world. He isn’t my dog but everytime I get to see him he brightens up my day. As I mentioned with the image of Tayto, I need to build my library of images of dogs. I love working on images of animals but I will say I still struggle with perspective and depth within the image. Regardless it is all a learning process. Enjoy and see you next time!

Two Hundred Thirty One

So I guess I was inspired by last nights image so I thought I would continue with the idea although tonight felt rushed. The images below are another image based off of a piece of piled fabric and then amplified. I enjoyed the process but I think the composition of this image bothers be a bit. It almost seems somewhat symmetrical in its outer shape which I can promise you is never my intent! Symmetry makes me crazy. Well there is always tomorrow night! Enjoy and see you next time.
