It’s Thanksgiving already?!?!

Where does the time go? It’s a question I ask myself almost daily. There are hundreds of reasons this question enters my mind but without a doubt each day at some point the reason is because I want to know if I will I get a chance to paint or draw today. Sadly, that answer has been no in recent months but maybe that will change.

Per my typical rants, I blame my lack of creative works on a busy life and demanding job. These can be good things at times; however when it comes to fueling those creative fires, it just gets in the way. Now I am a realist, so I understand I cannot quit my job, move to Italy and live in a cluttered little apartment surrounded by canvases and lovely things but there is a dreamer living in here who is constantly trying to access the situation and find a scenario that would work.

Recently I have been lucky enough to travel, quite a bit to be honest and most recently my husband and I went to New Orleans. Seeing new scenery and experiencing new cultures is always inspiring to me. The laid back, relaxed mentality of New Orleans has me reaccessing my current ways, which include constant worrying, over planning, and staying at work way too long. My sister said it well the other day when she sent me a pic of a quote which stated the following. Find three hobbies you love: One to make you money, One to keep you in shape, and one to be creative. I’m trying to keep this in mind.

So today, after work let us out early for the holiday weekend (and I actually left), I had extra time and I decided not to fill it with some unecessary task. Instead, I picked up my paintbrush and started to lay down color. My mind was filled with what felt like a mountain of ideas but I couldn’t organize my thoughts.  I decided to start with the under painting and build on top of that.

As I sat there watching the paint dry I started to drift. My mind has always had a fun way of seeing things in just about every shape and shadow I see. As much as I struggle to put my ideas down on paper my mind is constantly creating, imagining, and pulling from the abstract to build something more… and so it began. A brush stroke here, a dollop of color there and then some scraping to take those actions back.

Below is the first piece I have completed in recent months that has felt complete enough to share. It’s a smaller piece, approx 9″ x 5″ painted with acrylics on Bristol paper. It has moments from past works, organic aquatic imagery intertwined with feathery orbs and floral accents. To be honest it contains most of the bits that make me happy.

Last night I started painting for the fun of it and because the weather seemed perfect and I had a clear head and nothing to distract me. I love nights like that. Anyway I really had nothing in mind so I started to “doodle” and this is where we ended up. I’m not surprised to see that I ended up with clusters and webs, I mean lets be honest that is my favorite thing to draw, paint, make….

Enjoy and see you next time.

The Winner!

Above is the image that was decided on for the final Baby Shower Invitation for my wonderful friend Colleen. I have to say I have a soft spot for my little critter on the left here. He looks awfully cute! The baby shower has since come and gone which is another reason I finally feel comfortable posting these images. It was very well received and luckily helped trigger a body of work for me! The combination of the soft furry surface in contrast with the graphic patterns of the teacups was a great item to play around with. Enjoy.

Two Hundred Fifty-Eight!

Another free thinking image. No pressure involved in the making. I am fully aware that they are not award winner pieces but they keep the creative thoughts moving and that is half of the battle. If nothing else I am constantly learning, whether it be a technique or color relationships. Enjoy.

This would be considered one of those work doodles I start while reviewing voicemails. Granted they evolve from there, but it seems to be a great starting point. Recently I have been obsessed with doodles because I was listening to some news channel which did a segment on “doodling” and how in a recent stufy people who doodle actual remember more details regarding whatever was going on. It always worked for me so I am a firm believer! Enjoy.

Two Hundred Forty-Six!

This little guy just kind of happened. As I mentioned before I have been on an animal kick, for what reason I do not know. Regardless, as long as I am happy with the end results, whether it be a final piece or a sketch I’m happy out. My mom of course wants this turned into an Easter card, maybe she will be the sole recipient of this card then! Anyway, enjoy and see you next time.

I love this. Who doesn’t like spending Saturday evenings drawing abstract clusters while watching movies and drinking wine. Needless to say I think I needed a quick break from realistic imagery to get myself back in gear. I was messing with a few different shapes that I like to work with regularly as well as some new. I feel like I want to try this again on paper that might actually hold up and take on more mediums. The sharpie in this image was curling the paper after only a few minutes which irks my OCD. Lets just say that my journal is currently under a number of books to flatten out the pages that are warped from the more saturated mediums. Enjoy and see you next time.

Second post with an owl and there is a reason behind it but I’m not in the mood to tell anyone about it yet. In a way it bothers me that owls are so popular these days because they have always had a special place in my heart. Now when I mention it people assume I like them because its a fad, not the reason at all. I love the position that this owl is in, it shows its strength and all its beauty in the same image. Enjoy!

Two Hundred Thirty-Eight

Sometimes, if I see something that is inspiring I will just go ahead an paste it in my journal. This girls hair is fantastic and makes for a good base. This image is in the growing process and for whatever reason has started to incorporate woodland creatures. I’m pretty sure I’m still obsessed with the enchanted Forest we built at Halloween and our collection of woodland creatire cut outs. This can be confirmed from my work cubicle which still houses a skunk and deer silouette who receive glitter accessories from time to time. All I am saying is that my workspace is a good time considering I work in insurance. Enjoy!
