It’s Thanksgiving already?!?!

Where does the time go? It’s a question I ask myself almost daily. There are hundreds of reasons this question enters my mind but without a doubt each day at some point the reason is because I want to know if I will I get a chance to paint or draw today. Sadly, that answer has been no in recent months but maybe that will change.

Per my typical rants, I blame my lack of creative works on a busy life and demanding job. These can be good things at times; however when it comes to fueling those creative fires, it just gets in the way. Now I am a realist, so I understand I cannot quit my job, move to Italy and live in a cluttered little apartment surrounded by canvases and lovely things but there is a dreamer living in here who is constantly trying to access the situation and find a scenario that would work.

Recently I have been lucky enough to travel, quite a bit to be honest and most recently my husband and I went to New Orleans. Seeing new scenery and experiencing new cultures is always inspiring to me. The laid back, relaxed mentality of New Orleans has me reaccessing my current ways, which include constant worrying, over planning, and staying at work way too long. My sister said it well the other day when she sent me a pic of a quote which stated the following. Find three hobbies you love: One to make you money, One to keep you in shape, and one to be creative. I’m trying to keep this in mind.

So today, after work let us out early for the holiday weekend (and I actually left), I had extra time and I decided not to fill it with some unecessary task. Instead, I picked up my paintbrush and started to lay down color. My mind was filled with what felt like a mountain of ideas but I couldn’t organize my thoughts.  I decided to start with the under painting and build on top of that.

As I sat there watching the paint dry I started to drift. My mind has always had a fun way of seeing things in just about every shape and shadow I see. As much as I struggle to put my ideas down on paper my mind is constantly creating, imagining, and pulling from the abstract to build something more… and so it began. A brush stroke here, a dollop of color there and then some scraping to take those actions back.

Below is the first piece I have completed in recent months that has felt complete enough to share. It’s a smaller piece, approx 9″ x 5″ painted with acrylics on Bristol paper. It has moments from past works, organic aquatic imagery intertwined with feathery orbs and floral accents. To be honest it contains most of the bits that make me happy.

Three Hundred and Sixteen!

My dad said “hey look it’s the Travelocity Gnome” but I’d like to think my guy is a bit more interesting! The snow that has been completely consuming my life inspired the landscape and although it was not intentional the sky appears to be my interpretation of an aurora borealis. Loving these small-scale illustrations. Enjoy and see you next time!

Two Hundred and Ninety-Two!

Switching gears, focusing on some character drawings instead. I know it seems somewhat strange that I jump from totally random or abstract imagery to this but I love the result of these studies.I want to integrate the two but until then I will work on them separately. This little fellow was too cute to not draw and in regards to the wheels… I have no idea. Maybe next time he will be driving the cart these wheels belong to! That would be a pretty great image. Enjoy and see you next time.

Two Hundred Seventy Four!

Tonight’s image started as something entirely different about a month ago and I used that under-painting to help develop the final image. I suppose its really just a study of shape and color. I do enjoy the piece but it feels like a piece of a complete image maybe due to its size or elongated shape. Either way Enjoy and See you next time.

Two Hundred Seventy Three

Series 365 - 173

Day 1 created on September 8th

This image may not be complete but I wanted to share it now. I really enjoy sections but the upper left corner and the right semi circle section feel incomplete. Lets see what tonight brings I haven’t decided which piece I want to work on. Enjoy and see you next time!

Day 2 – revisited on September 9th

The left portion of the painting was really bothering me hence the addition of a new layer. I love the effect it has on the area but I wish I had gone darker. I feel that this idea could work really well with the trickling in of light. There is always a next time! Enjoy

Two Hundred Seventy-Two!

This was an image I finished last night. My heads been crazy recently so I decided to dive into a piece and not stop until I felt it was done. I started Friday night with a basic wash on the paper. I had been cleaning my cubicle at work and saw my notes page and thought it was actually very inspiring. It was lists and doodles which I then worked over with white out and highlighted or scratched out the remaining items on the page. I know it was never meant to be anything but it really flipped a switch in my head. It was like documentation but then the need to hide the information. On Friday night I worked on this image for ages just working off the last line I laid down. In the morning I continued going back in with Gesso to hide some items I felt did not work. By Sunday night I was done. I couldn’t see anywhere I needed to work on. I’ve already moved onto the second piece….. Enjoy and see you next time.

Two Hundred Seventy!

A few random bird sketches. These were never meant to be more than what they are but I was just messing around and decided birds would be the topic of choice for a few. In all fairness these are not super new, but summer has been so crazy busy and I haven’t had time to really dedicate any time to this page. I’m feeling rather inspired after finally completing one major summer project, a surprise 65th I hosted for my mom! It was lovely and she was completely taken by surprise, Ill add a link soon to see some of the details. Enjoy and see you next time!

Above are a collection of sketches I made for my new tattoo. Initially the idea was more involved but the longer I worked the image the simpler I wanted it. Although I do love the first two images they would have made for a more complicated and probably less clean image. The tattoo has a lot of meaning for me however I’m not to inclined to discuss it on here. Maybe if you know me I’ll tell you in person. Enjoy and see you next time.

Two Hundred Sixty-Eight!

Last night I started painting for the fun of it and because the weather seemed perfect and I had a clear head and nothing to distract me. I love nights like that. Anyway I really had nothing in mind so I started to “doodle” and this is where we ended up. I’m not surprised to see that I ended up with clusters and webs, I mean lets be honest that is my favorite thing to draw, paint, make….

Enjoy and see you next time.

The Winner!

Above is the image that was decided on for the final Baby Shower Invitation for my wonderful friend Colleen. I have to say I have a soft spot for my little critter on the left here. He looks awfully cute! The baby shower has since come and gone which is another reason I finally feel comfortable posting these images. It was very well received and luckily helped trigger a body of work for me! The combination of the soft furry surface in contrast with the graphic patterns of the teacups was a great item to play around with. Enjoy.
