The 3″ x 3″ Challenge – 1st Post – A fall breeze on a summer day….

A fall breeze on a summer day, probably the most ideal kind of day in my mind. On days like these you can enjoy every moment outside, the early morning peace accompanied by the tweets of birds, the mid day rush of passersby-ers trying to finish up their errands while you sip on a cup of tea and the cool evenings wrapped up in a cozy blanket on the back porch.

When your mind is at peace I actually find it very hard to paint but it is one of the few times I have the time to. I decided a few weeks ago to start painting again. For those who don’t already know there was a serious lull in production but I needed a break after my last challenge. I haven’t decided on all the parameters but currently we have the following…

  • 3″ x 3″ square  image size
  • 7″ x 7″ square canvas size
  • mixed media
  • one day per image

I have not decided on a number of total images or a time frame but maybe I will figure that out eventually. Below are a few of the images I have created thus far.

Backyard Bunnies – inspired by the baby bunnies that took up shelter in my flower bed. I was happy to finally have an opportunity to utilize my own reference photos!

Science/planetary – This was nothing to begin with just a few random shapes. It got a little muddy but at least I got it done.

Succulents are my favorite! – I know that succulents are only a minor part of this image but its what inspired the piece. Succulents are fantastic. They have the best shape, need hardly any maintenance and have wonderfully vibrant color.

Three Hundred and Sixty-Five!

OMG, I finished and with 2 hours to spare! I finished the revised challenge that is, 365 images in 3 years time! We’ll it is the last post of the challenge and as I was scrambling to finish up the images I did have the opportunity to finish a couple pieces I felt really strongly about, this one included. It completed my panel piece which I will post in full at a later time. I love the critters in contrast with the designs on the eggs. I realize the two aspects don’t blend well but I love the juxtaposition. These little critters were initially born from  this challenge so it seemed fitting to end with a group of them. Also, as Easter is only a few days away why not celebrate! I’ll be doing a recap post this week so I won’t babble on here but always Enjoy and see you next time!

Three Hundred and Fifty-Four!

This is a sketch was drawn for a painting I painted when I got home from Indiana. The image does not look the same at all but you obviously see the concept, Easter Bunny and Easter Eggs. I kind of liked doing this image because there was not a weight on my shoulders like the paintings carry. Initially drawn in pencil then finished with pen, there was room for error. Enjoy and see you next time!

Two Hundred and Ninety-Three!

Sticking with the furry critters, I tackled a new rabbit friend. I like how official he feels standing so straight up. I love animal behavior especially when it contradicts their natural movement. Saying that I am fully aware that rabbits can stand like this but it seems a bit awkward. I just imagine him delivering a little speech soon arms raising up to emphasize his story. Naturally, the small addition of the bow was necessary, a full blow vest would have been ideal had I not already drawn in the fur. Next time! Enjoy.

The Winner!

Above is the image that was decided on for the final Baby Shower Invitation for my wonderful friend Colleen. I have to say I have a soft spot for my little critter on the left here. He looks awfully cute! The baby shower has since come and gone which is another reason I finally feel comfortable posting these images. It was very well received and luckily helped trigger a body of work for me! The combination of the soft furry surface in contrast with the graphic patterns of the teacups was a great item to play around with. Enjoy.

Two Hundred Sixty-Five!

image

As it is finally warm outside and I feel that spring may officially be here I have decided to share a few pieces I have been working on. These pieces are very important to me and I was even nervous about sharing them due to someone stealing them, but I suppose at the end of the day I know I did them and if someone steals them shame on them. This image was the result of a request made for a friends baby shower. Although this was not the final piece used on the invitation it was a very rewarding image. We had decided against it as it felt like an Easter image and we all agreed we wanted variety in the animals depicted. As always enjoy and see you next time.

Two Hundred Fifty-Nine!

This is a cropped portion of an image I recently made.

I apologize for not showing the whole image, but unfortunately I’m not ready to. Call me crazy but I am still working on figuring out the rights to my images and throwing copyrights on them. I never really had to worry about it but now I feel more open to these kinds of problems. Regardless I love sharing with everyone and hearing the feedback or seeing that people respond well to the image.

I feel like this gang of animals are going on a trip in their green umbrella to some new adventure and all the time the sly fox is appearing to have questionable motives. So much for a cute and fuzzy story! Enjoy and see you next time.

Two Hundred Forty-Nine!

I don’t love this at all, but I did it so it counts! This must have been a feet firmly planted on the ground kind of day. Who knows? Enjoy

Two Hundred Forty-Eight!

image

So I may have just realized that the last few images have all been rabbit related. I swear that was not intentional, I imagine there is some quality I like about them that makes me want to draw them. Regardless this here rabbit is well a bit more “trippy” I suppose than the others. Welcome to my life, one minute I’m right there with the rest of the world, feet firmly planted on the ground and the next… floating away! On that note, I’m drug free, each to there own but I guess I don’t need them. Enjoy
