Two Hundred and Ninety One!

Let’s revert back to the tree like imagery once again…. Not a fan but I am trying to just go with the challenge and not edit what I post. Based partly on the view from my back window, which currently comprises of snow mounds 4 feet high and the tops of fences and shrubbery peaking out from behind it. I will say that I was able to integrate some thoughts which always feels good. I love journaling and this is a way for me to integrate that idea into my works. Enjoy and see you next time!

Well another year has arrived…

OK, first off I would like to say that I feel like a slacker. I have not painted or drawn in months (other than the quick doodle on a notepad) and all I can really put it down to is mental state of mind. I have thought about picking up a pencil or paintbrush and just putting some marks on paper but then I always get discouraged. I couldn’t necessarily tell you why but I am done with that and it’s time to move on.

Yesterday on my drive home I decided this was going to be the final year of this actual challenge. Almost 3 years ago I started this challenge with the original goal of completing 365 drawings in one year starting on April 2nd 2012. Now it’s February 6th of 2015 and I have exactly 55 days to complete the remaining 79 images. I think it will be tough but as my husband pointed out it all depends to what degree of finished I expect them to be. I mean there were many images over the past 286 that took 5 days to complete.

So, what I propose is this. 79 drawings over the next 55 days. That’s about 1.5 drawings a day. When all is said and done that would mean 365 drawings over 3 years, which when you think about it is a drawing every 3 days, sounds pretty good actually.

Now I am not saying that when I complete this task I will put away my paint brush or burn all my remaining paper. That is not my intent at all. Basically I will just move onto the next project. For years I have thought of using all of these images as a starting point for a more finished body of work but would not allow myself to really go there until the first project was complete. That day is quickly approaching, let’s hope I can make it. This will be a sprint to the finish line!

As always thanks for dropping by and I hope you will visit again.

Two Hundred Eighty-Two!

IMG_5543

Small little image I worked on last week. I wasn’t sure what I was going for but I really liked the integration of the teal. Its a like a pop of fresh new color that really hasn’t been in many of the other pieces. I do feel like I am starting to get a little stuck…. Apparently when my mind settles down I lose my drive, guess I need a new stress factor. I know I will regret writing that as soon as it comes along. Enjoy and see you next time!

Two Hundred Eighty!

I feel like people are going to wonder what I am thinking about but current;y I’m not really sure. All I know is I am fixated on this idea of the body, being rooted and becoming part of the environment that surrounds you. It seems natural that I turn to different type of growths such as a fungi, since I have always been captivated by their shape and color. They are a strange organism, growing on decaying organic matter. Anyway, it just feels like another piece from a series of images floating around in my head. Enjoy and see you next time!

Two Hundred Thirty-Seven

This makes me happy. This was the front of a card I drew for Liam’s Birthday. It is basically a drawn collage of a weekend away. It feels like a journal entry in itself and contains everything I want to remember but in a playful way, kind of like an eye spy image! Enjoy.

Two Hundred Nineteen-Twenty… I’m Back.

So needless to say that is has been quite some time since my last post. A lot has happened over the past few months, which I will explain. Regardless a series of events have brought me back to myself and I was able to sit down and finally pick up a paint brush again. It’s always strange to me how easily you can stray from something that brings you such joy and how hard it can be to jump back on board.

It began back in October, when Lee and I moved to a town that was much more central for our lives. Lee’s commute had been over 2 hours on a normal commuting day and since he is the bread-winner, it was important for him to not spend 4 hours in the car each day. That much time can make a person go crazy, but most of all we never got to see each other. Once we moved, my commute doubled and although I loved the company I was working for, it was never meant to be my career. Eventually, I fell into a wonderful job, that although has nothing to do with my major or who I am as a person, is a wonderful company. Shout out to Suffolk Construction, Risk Management represent! HA ridiculous. All of this was happening over those crazy holiday months when nothing seems normal and no one has anytime.

My artwork fell to the back burner and although I kept trying to rekindle the flame nothing seemed to work. Once I took the position at Suffolk, my days became normal but I was settling. Lets just say settling took me a while. I was kind of trying to find myself again, a fresh new start. It always seems to come around the same time of the year, not January like everyone would imagine, normally late February into March. First it was getting the job under my belt, then I started focusing on my health, which has recently turned to Crossfit. Its only been 2 weeks, but I love it already! And finally, my artwork comes into play.

The last few weeks were weird, I felt odd but could not quite pin point it. Then the other day out of the blue I just picked up a pen and started to draw an image I had been thinking about. Now its nothing special, more of a face then anything, but it seemed important.

Now as you can see, it’s a doodle, it’s also Day Two Hundred and Nineteen. It felt good to make something, but I couldn’t stop here. Oddly enough it took me another few days to think to paint it and even trying to start  that seemed like a battle. My artist “nook” was covered in stuff, its like a drop place for anything I ‘ll “get to later.” Regardless, I came home from work one night and for no reason I was mad as hell. I started cleaning, cleaning was a good start. Then I tried to make the atmosphere relaxing, I know its cheesy but I lit a few candles and put on some classical music. It seemed to work because before I knew I was setting up the table, filling up the water jug and taping down the paper.

Then I began. I knew I was thinking about the above image but I didn’t really plan it on the page. I love the end result though. I thought initially that I only loved it because it was the first thing I had done in over 2 months but really I think it might actually be somewhat interesting.

The above is the complete image, also known now as Day Two Hundred Twenty. As always, I have included a cropped version to see more details although I didn’t really make too many small intricacies to draw you in. What I love that happened unintentionally is the overlay of colors. Originally, I thought that I enjoyed the lower section better, but the more “feathery” looking section has grown on me.

In the end, I think this may be the start to another good run. I know I to some degree failed at my initial goal of 365 images in the year, but I’m trying to think of this in a new light. I am an artist, I am creative but I am a real life girl and unfortunately I cannot be an artist full-time and make ends meet quite yet. That’s not to say that that day will never come because it will, I’m just hoping it happens before I retire!

The new goal is to complete the challenge. I’m not giving myself a deadline, but the sooner I complete it the better. This is a rather broad adjustment but hopefully that means that without restraints I may be able to complete this thing stress free.

Enjoy and I’ll see you next time.

Two Hundred Eighteen!

This image started as a color wheel kind of thing that gradually grew into a bit more. Now the color is a bit overwhelming, but I do love the overall shape that developed. Enjoy and see you next time!

One Hundred and Seventy-Two!

The newest project, day one. This is the newest painting I have been working on, it is far from complete and to me right now it looks like a crayon box. All of the primary colors, not really blended together well, but this is the base of the painting and only part of it really. Anyway Enjoy and see you next time.

One Hundred Sixty-Eight, Nine and Seventy!

Alright so I have been working on one piece for a little bit recently and it is taking up multiple days. It was totally intimidating because it is the largest acrylic painting I have done since high school which was a while ago. Anyway I’m delighted I am trying this but I was super nervous about posting it before it was completed. It still is not done by any means BUT I have to show you what I have been doing. These are a few pictures of days 168, 169, and 170. The lower right corner was the first day, but unfortunately I did not photograph it at the end of the night so you have to use your imagination, a fearful endeavor I know! Enjoy!

So imagine day one bottom right up to the tips of the yellow cone-ish things that are nested within each other. Day two I added all the components on the left side, even the HORRIBLE lime green, which luckily did not last. Day three was the addition of the blue elements and some tweaking.

details, who doesn’t love a good detail!

After the third day, the green has been retouched, still not exactly where I want it but much better!

One Hundred and Sixty-Seven!

So this is the current state of this mask, as you can see the eye is kinda wonky but over all the actual base sculpture came out nice… The face was primed and then I was able to air brush it which was only somewhat successful. The color palate drives me mad but painting with a brush and a gun are a rather different experience. I’m pretty sure you will see a third state of this mask but for now, we must take it as it is! Enjoy!
